The Nation's Healthcare Finance Resource
The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) is the nation's leading personal membership organization for more than 32,000 financial management professionals employed by hospitals, long-term care facilities, public accounting and consulting firms, and other healthcare-related organizations.
The association represents its members and meets their needs by providing opportunity for professional development and growth, influencing healthcare policy, and communicating information and technical data.
HFMA was established on September 30, 1946, as the American Association of Hospital Accountants by 16 hospital accountants who recognized a need for a group to address their special professional requirements.
The member driven organization is governed by a Board of Directors that is elected by the membership to serve as the primary policy setting body for the Association.
Strength in Education
HFMA's education programs respond to healthcare executives' questions, present them with ideas, and help professionals develop new skills and talents to lead their organization to success.
The Association's premier education event is the Annual National Institute, which is offered in June in a different part of the country. Twice each year HFMA hosts in Washington, D.C., the Institute on Current Financial Issues, which provides the latest information on regulatory and legislative issues that affect healthcare finance.
Key Representation on Issues
HFMA represents the financial side of the healthcare industry with interpretation, commentary, and advisement about issues such as Medicare's prospective price setting system, capital, cost accounting, uncompensated services, and uniform billing.
HFMA fosters the professional development of its members by encouraging pursuit of certification as Fellows of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHFMA) and Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP). The exams are computer-based. This means that candidates can arrange to take the examinations at their convenience at a testing site near them.
An Effective Communicator
HFMA's publications and other communications resources address information needs and interests of the membership. The Association publishes Healthcare Financial Management, the industry's principal publication devoted to financial management issues. Also published are Notes from National, Patient Accounts, a quarterly monograph series, textbooks, and study guides.
HFMA's 32,000 members intensify their Association involvement in 70 chapters throughout the country. These active networks offer localized programs and services. HFMA has offices within the Chicago metropolitan area in Westchester, IL, (the headquarters) and Washington, D.C.
