Certification Process

Background Information

The certification process is designed for those individuals who are willing to put forth that special effort to achieve an accepted standard of excellence.  We encourage you to begin your pursuit of excellence and certified status.

In order to become certified you must successfully complete 2 exams, the Core exam and one of four specialty exams in the areas of Accounting and Finance, Patient Financial Services, Management of Physician Practices and Managed Care.  The exam questions are based on materials in the HFMA study guides.  We encourage you to participate in coaching courses that are taught by local professionals and provide practical advice to passing the exam; however, you may also choose to self-study. The Rochester Regional HFMA Chapter currently schedules a coaching course for the Core exam in the fall if there is sufficient interest by the chapter members.  If you’re interested in participating in a coaching course for the Core exam, please contact one of the committee members. Committee members are also available as resources for those persuing specialty exams.

Exam Information

Proctored internet based testing is used for all exams.  For those participating in the core coaching courses, exams are scheduled immediately following the course completion.  The Rochester chapter has a number of members who are proctors and ready to meet the members’ needs.  Members who have participated in recent testing cite advantages of taking the specialty exams as soon as possible after passing the Core exam.

Certification

The HFMA national website outlines all of the certification requirements.  As it generally takes a year to complete both exams, we encourage our members to begin the process as soon as possible.

Need a little help preparing for the HFMA Certification Exams?  When you're ready to take the next step, the Certification Committee is here to help. If you're already certified and want to help others attain this status, we'd love to have you join us!

If you've been thinking about becoming Certified, the Certification Committee would like to hear from you.  We'd also like to hear from anyone planning to take one of the specialty exams.  Please let us know which exam you'll be taking, and if you think you'll need some help to prepare for the exam.  While it's doubtful we'd be able to offer a coaching course for each specialty, the Committee will do some brainstorming to determine how we might be able to assist you.
